This is for fans frames that are not square and are mounted on a standard radiator that has provisions for 120mm mounting points. When you have a fan shaped like the corsair AF120 or any fan that is not a square frame it will allow air to escape past the gaps the manufacturer expected to be filled by a standard fan frame. When you have a static pressure fan any gaps that allow air to escape is detrimental to the efficiency of the fan to cool properly since it needs to push air thru a radiator and the path of least resistance now becomes the mounting gap instead of thru the fins of the rad. this mounts between the fan and radiator and is 2mm thick so it should not cause a issue with screw depth unless you have barley and thread engagement in the rad now.
