Step back in time with this meticulously crafted chess set, inspired by designs from the Russian Empire between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Perfectly fitting a 45mm field size, these pieces echo the elegance of the past with a modern twist for 3D printing. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a chess lover, this set offers a unique blend of tradition and innovation. While these pieces deviate from standard tournament sizes, they bring a distinctive charm to any casual game. This game is intended for boards with a cell size og 45mm and 50mm.

Use STL version for the Knights, as it has added details.

The STEP versions are included if you need to alter something to be able to print or if you need to scale. Please still respect license.

History

This design har been modeled on the sets that were made in the Russian Empire sometime between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, well before the 1917 revolution. Chess sets of a similar design were later produced in the Soviet era, particularly in the 1920s and 1930s, by the Artel Kultsport. Many of the artisans in this cooperative had previously crafted chess sets before the revolution, which influenced the designs of the Soviet pieces. However, the Soviet versions were more simplified, with thicker legs, a feature particularly noticeable in the pawns.

This specific version has the horses remodeled as well as everything has been optimized for printing without compromising the look too much.

If you know more about the history of this design, please write me, I would love to know!

Printing Tips:

Consider using a resin printer for this. Print it as dense as you can for the right feel. Alternatively here are some tips for FDM

  • Material: PLA Mat PolyTerra or Bambulab.
  • Layer Height: 0.08mm
  • Perimeters: 4
  • Infill: 15% or more
  • Speed: 50% (adjust as needed) Silent mode on Bambulab machines
  • Temperature: 195°C
  • Cooling: 360-degree or sandwiched cooling recommended.
  • Other (Orca Slicer): Enable option “Slow down for curled perimeters”

Note: Printing can be challenging, but with patience and the right settings, you’ll achieve beautiful results. Print cool, print slow, and start with a test piece to ensure success.
