Intro

I built myself an Ikea kitchen. Room height is 220cm so I had to go for the small upper cupboards. The Ikea Metod fume extractor of size 60x60 (Art# 995.053.17) has only 2 small sections to put spices and a 27cmx17.5cm sized space which is hardly of any use. So I was looking for an option to make use of this space.

I came across the pullout spice rack of spongybob1958 here. However it did not fit exactly. The racks were slightly too wide to fit 3 in the space and the height was not fitting perfectly. I could fit just two rails of course but decided to optimize the design for my purpose.

So I decided to adapt the width slightly to fit 3 rails exactly into the Ikea Metod spot. Also tested only with spice cans typically used here in Switzerland with a diameter of 4-4.5cm and hights of 10cm-12.5cm.

In order to fit different sizes I have created 2 options. The "normal" option is about 50/50 split in height. And there is another one allowing taller cans with a shorter top part.

Printing instructions

The design has also been optimized for easy printing. So all parts should be printable easily in the orientation of the STL. You might have to rotate the model to print it diagonally on your print bed as I had to do it on my Anycubic Vyper.

What you need

  • Ikea Metod 995.053.17 or similar space (27x17.5cm)
  • 3 pairs of sliding rails, 200mm (8"), e.g. here
  • 6 book binding posts to mount the rails to the top/bottom of the assembled rack sliders. I have used M5x6 book binding posts found here
  • 12x M3 screws to assemble the rack sliders and top part. I have used PC assembly ODD screws (see pictures), Any other M3x5 screws should do it too.
  • 12x wood screws to secure each rail by 2 screws to the cabinet.

Assembly instructions

  • Print 3 sets of slider assemblies. A set consists of either:
    • 1x normal lower, 1x normal upper, 1x top
    • 1x tall lower, 1x tall upper, 1x top
  • Print 1x Spice Rack Rail
  • Put a an "upper" piece on top of a "lower" piece, they should snap in place by the mounting posts
  • Secure them with 2 screws on the edges
  • Put a "top" piece on top of the slider assembly and secure it with 2 screws from the inside
  • Place 3 sliding rails into the printed rail guide and securely screw them into the Metod cabinet. I do recommend to keep about 2.5cm distance from the front.
  • Securely screw the top rails at exactly the same position on the top side of the Method cabinet. Hint: You might use the printed rail as a guide also on top side but DO NOT keep the rail mounted on TOP and bottom as the rack would not fit any more. The rail should only be mounted either on bottom or top (bottom recommended).
  • Mount the slider assemblies to the rails using book binding posts.

Note: The original design included only the lower rail. As my slider assembly perfectly fitting the Metod cabinet I decided to add more stability to the rack by adding to upper rail as well. Feel free to try it with lower rails only.
