I came across this idea online, but the models are my own design.
After using them, I personally would have preferred them to be a little thicker (around 4-5mm), but it’s not necessary. I put them into rather hard ground with all my weight (120kg—yes, the irony of ultralight hiking) and they didn’t break.
To create them, you'll need the following additional parts:
- Carbon fiber rods (I used 3mm x 50mm ones)
- Starlock washers (I bought an assortment of them)
- 1 x 4-5mm nut for assembly
Both of these can be easily obtained from Amazon or AliExpress.
To assemble, you'll need to 3D print the push rod and end cap. I highly recommend printing the end cap in a bright color so you don’t lose it in the grass. I printed mine in PETG, and the rod in ABS, but the material choice is not critical.
Safety Precautions:
- Carbon fiber materials are toxic—protect your eyes and lungs. Use water to limit dust exposure.
- Be cautious when handling the thin rod to avoid puncturing your hand. Proceed at your own risk.
Assembly Process:
- Cut the carbon fiber rod in half.
- Prepare the washer: Place the nut on the table, and put a 3mm washer on top of it.
- Insert the rod: Press the rod onto the washer and clamp it down (I used quick-release clamps) so the washer is firmly seated. The table serves as a stop, and the nut limits how deep the washer can go. It’s advisable to immobilize the setup.
- Attach the end cap: Slide the end cap toward the end of the rod. Place another washer on the end of the rod, then use the push rod and a clamp to drive the washer to the end, securing the end cap.
- Sharpen the rod: Finally, sharpen the carbon fiber rod with a file.
