there are a few variations on this kind of design, but I wanted to make one that:
for v2, I fixed a mistake that made the inner boxes the wrong dimension. they still fit into the outer box, but only in one orientation.
I'm not really sure how I'm going to use this, yet—I was mostly riffing on a visual idea—so I haven't made any other modules.
if there's something specific that you have in mind, let me know, and I'll give it a try if I have time. alternatively, I'm including the STEP files, so that you can edit it yourself pretty easily.
if you come up with something you like, please post a remix!
I did add a pencil cup module, for the Back-to-School contest.
if your printer is reasonably accurate, fitting this should be no problem—there's a 0.1mm clearance around all the inner boxes—I know that this is overkill for some directions, but I didn't want to make them fit in only one way.
whatever print settings normally work for you should be fine; I normally use 3 walls, and gyroid infill at 5% or 15%. no support/brim should be necessary for any of these files.
if there's interest, I'll clean up and post the Fusion 360 file.
The author remixed this model.
I used the solid box as the base/tray for the outer box in this model
