I found a broken fertilizer/seed spreader and wanted to fix it. The part from the pinion gear to the spinner plate had sheared off, revealing a hollow space inside the gear.
Since the spinner plate uses a hex slot, I just needed a friction fit into the pinion gear - since this shouldn't be subject to great force, no solvent or bolt is needed to transmit power.
The fit should be done with:
- the axle removed
- transmission gear housing loose
Instructions:
Remove one wheel - it does not matter which side.
Slide axle out and remove transmission.
Put the slip fit into the hollow space of the pinion gear shaft.
Position the hex end into the spinner plate
Reinstall axle, ensuring axle notches seat in both transmission and wheel splines.
Put whatever wheel you took off back on.
Print horizontally with supports to ensure shear resistance - the resulting support material on the slip fit shaft can actually act as a “lock” in the hollow shaft.
30% infill - whatever material you prefer but PETG is a great choice here.
