Most systems I've seen for storing filament prefer area to height. I've got 3m ceilings, but only 112m\u00b2 of floor space. I wanted a dense solution for taking filament (whether replacement loads with no spool, spooled filament, or a spool inside a 4L drybox (i.e. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6254854)) into the sky.

Each of my Magnificent Bowls snugly fits two dryboxes or three replacement spools. They furthermore expose honeycomb walls on the sides and bottom, suitable for stacking struts and anything else you might want to attach. The front and back are open, and support a wide collection of \u201cpanels\u201d; these panels can identify the filament, or just keep it from falling out, or even expose more honeycomb. They can be held in place with M5 screws/rods or 5x2x2mm magnets.

Each Bowl is right under 166g (assuming 9% gyroid infill and ABS), so you get six from a spool, and their weight (plus that of their loads) can be supported using the struts. I have stacked up to eight without problems, supporting 16 dryboxes in a little more than half a square foot of floor space.

I recommend use of a 0.4mm nozzle. ABS and ASA are great materials for the Bowls--they're light, strong, and cheap. PETG also works, though it is a bit denser (PETG bowls run about 200g, so you only get five from a spool). I haven't tried PLA, but I doubt it would be a problem. I've printed my struts using polycarbonate exclusively, and recommend using a similarly strong material. No supports are necessary, though I usually use a layer of raft for my struts.
