New Life for an Old Lawnmower

Recently, I decided to give my old lawnmower a new life by upgrading its wheels. I created a new tread pattern for the wheels using 3D printing on my Prusa MK4S printer. For modeling, I used Shapr3D, which allows me to design precisely and intuitively. You can see the results in the attached photos.

Universal Model for Any Wheel

I designed the model to be universal and easily adaptable to any lawnmower wheels. In the slicer, simply use the “scale” function to adjust the dimensions as needed. For printing, I recommend using tough yet flexible materials like TPU or TPE. These materials ensure excellent grip and durability while remaining intact when crossing hard surfaces such as sidewalks. Materials like PETG, ASA, or ABS can also work, but they may wear out faster.

Easy Installation and Secure Attachment

Installation is simple. The printed tread is easily slipped onto the wheels, and for added stability, I incorporated three holes into the model. Using three screws, the tread can be securely attached to the lawnmower wheels. This approach ensures that the tread stays in place even during heavy use.

A More Efficient Solution Than Replacing the Entire Wheel

When designing the model, I was inspired by existing solutions found online. However, most designs involve printing an entire wheel, which I consider inefficient. The old lawnmower wheels are often still functional, and only the tread needs improvement. This method saves both time and material.

Nový život pre starú kosačku
Nedávno som sa rozhodol dať svojej starej kosačke na trávnik nový život a to pomocou vylepšenia jej kolies. Vytvoril som nový dezén pre kolesá pomocou 3D tlače na mojej tlačiarni Prusa MK4S. Ako modelovací softvér som použil Shapr3D, ktorý mi umožňuje presne a intuitívne vytvárať vlastné návrhy. Výsledok môžete vidieť na fotkách, ktoré som priložil.

Univerzálny model pre každé koleso
Model som navrhol tak, aby bol univerzálny a dal sa jednoducho prispôsobiť na akékoľvek kolesá kosačiek. V sliceri stačí použiť funkciu „scale“ a upraviť rozmery podľa potreby. Pre tlač odporúčam použiť tvrdé flexibilné materiály ako TPU alebo TPE. Tieto materiály zabezpečujú výbornú priľnavosť a odolnosť, pričom sa nepoškodia pri prechode po tvrdých povrchoch, ako je chodník. Materiály ako PETG, ASA alebo ABS síce tiež fungujú, ale môžu sa rýchlejšie opotrebovať.

Jednoduchá inštalácia a bezpečné uchytenie
Samotná inštalácia je jednoduchá. Vytlačený dezén sa jednoducho nasunie na kolesá a pre väčšiu stabilitu som do modelu zakomponoval tri otvory. Pomocou troch skrutiek je možné dezén pevne priskrutkovať ku kolesám kosačky. Tento prístup zabezpečuje, že dezén zostane na svojom mieste aj počas intenzívneho používania.

Efektívnejšie riešenie ako celé koleso
Pri navrhovaní modelu som sa inšpiroval existujúcimi riešeniami na internete. Väčšina návrhov však zahŕňa tlač celého kolesa, čo považujem za neefektívne. Staré kolesá kosačky sú často funkčné a stačí len vylepšiť ich dezén. Týmto spôsobom šetríte čas aj materiál.
