Blue Tang SCUBA Dive Knife Handle Replacement

This design is a replacement handle for a “Blue Tang” SCUBA dive knife now sold by the brand Underwater Kinetics.  The Blue Tang is an excellent dive knife, and since I designed a replacement handle for a different brand dive knife that used a very similar blade, I decided to modify it to accept the blade of the Blue Tang.

The knife blade is held in the original stock handle with a screw-on end nut.  The portion of the blade that is inside the handle also has a 5mm slot that can be used to secure the blade in the handle as an alternate attachment method.  I've designed this version of handle to attach using an M5 nut and bolt through this slot. The handle will work equally well for both the blunt tip and sharp tip versions of knife.

The blade-style used in this knife appears to be a rather common design that is shared by other brands of dive knife.  It is therefore possible that this handle may work for other of those knives as well.

The M5 nut and bolt used to attach the handle should be 18mm long, and is recommended to be 316 gauge stainless steel for its improved resistance to corrosion by salt water.  If only using the knife in fresh water, a black oxide coated stainless steel screw will likely be sufficient.
