Hi hi, wonderful people!
Sometimes you just want to make a container with a lid-flipper handle, but somehow it ends up with wheels, too! This one came about as the conjunction of two separate ideas, you see - the flippy handle, and thoughts on whether it would be viable to put wheels on a container that printed on its edge...
One of the obvious limitations with printing a container in an orientation other than right-way-up is that there tends to be an overhang issue directly upwards, with either a wall or floor suspended up in the air. There are a few ways to deal with this, and one is to just orient things so that there is no such overhang, and just nicely-angled walls that meet at a vertex instead, which is how this model works.
However, the bigger question I had was whether an integrated axle with wheels would fit reasonable into that kind of structure, without impacting the space inside too much. And then it got a flippy lid, too :)
The Rolly Bin tilts backwards so that the handle is slightly down, which is its most stable position. There was an early version that just had a support in the middle, rather than that nice, wide slab, but it was far too easy to accidentally nudge it so that it tipped over sideways. It's much more stable now :)
Print Description
This is an articulated print, so make sure there aren't any print issues like stringing or overextrusion that might cause moving parts to bind together!
Print Dimensions
The Rolly Bin occupies 159mm x 133mm on the print bed and is 108mm tall.
Supports Needed?
Not at all! Designed for straightforward printing!
Scalability
This one should scale up or down quite readily, with the usual caveats about bits getting looser and tighter accordingly.
Print Orientation
The Rolly Bin prints on its side, one wheel up, one wheel down, and the lid closed.
Further Thoughts
Theory confirmed, it scales down pretty easily :) I gave it a try at 60% but I suspect I could have gone smaller still. Obviously slicing, filament and printer plays a part in success as things get smaller, but still, it's cool when these things just work :D
Happy printing!
