More than a year ago, I designed a Secret Box that can only be opened using centrifugal force. It gained many fans, even though it wasn't very easy to print.

Today, I’m presenting a new version: easy to print and much more visually appealing!
The outer dimensions of the box including the lid: Height 120mm, Diameter 130mm.

It's great as a gift box: "If you can open it, everything in it is yours!" :-)
Or as a party gag!

Feel free to check out my entire collection of “Secret Boxes”.

Centrifugal force and gravity! This is how the trick works. But don’t tell anyone!

Place the box on a smooth surface and rotate it once quickly around its axis. The centrifugal force causes the screws inside the box to move outwards. Now the lid can be lifted off or inserted.
To close the box, turn it on its side and rotate it slightly. The gravity causes the screws to move to the inside of the lid. No chance of opening the box now!

Here's what you need for that:

  • 6 x Hex Socket Screw M3x12 (see picture)

Printing information

The STL files are correctly aligned.

Layer height: 0.2mm
Infill: 10%
Support: none

When printing the box, insert a print pause at layer #486 (97.20mm) to place the six screws into the designated recesses before resuming the print.

I recommend printing the lid in two colors, with a color change at layer #56 (11.20mm).
As you can see in the photos, I started with light gray and switched to a light green.

The handle is actually part of the lid. It is printed in place.

I am looking forward to your Makes! :-)
