Parthenon 1:100 Scale Model - Corner Section

This is a scale model of the front left corner section of the Parthenon, modelled precisely to known dimensions from various archaeological studies of the original. It consists of the crepidoma, or the base of the Parthenon, three Doric columns of the Pteron (outer colonnade), the epistyle on which gold-plated shields were later added by Alexander the Great, the taenia that protrudes slightly over the epistyle and holds the regula, the metope with triglyphs which originally featured impressive sculptures between them around the full circumference of the Parthenon, the ceiling that merges the cornice and coffers into one piece, and finally the roof and pediment.

Dimensions:
Base: 9x9cm

Column height: ~10cm

Total height: ~18cm

Printing

Nozzle size: I printed my example with a 0.2mm nozzle and this is recommended to get the most detail out of the model unless you print it at a larger scale. A 0.4mm nozzle can likely be used for many of the parts without losing much detail, such as the crepidoma, epistyle, and metope.

Shields: There are three versions of the epistylon: one with no shields, one with shields built-in to the model, and one with holes for shields to be printed separately and glued into place. The Parthenon originally had no shields decorating the epistyle when completed, these were added later by Alexander the Great. If you do want the version with shields, the built-in version is suited for if you want to print the shields in the same colour or paint them manually in Bambu Studio as a multi-colour print. If you prefer to print the shields separately (recommended to save on print time and filament), use the “epistylon-with-shield-holes” version and print 6 of the “shield” parts in your desired filament.

Filament: I used Bambu PLA Matte Ivory White for all parts except for the shields, which are Bambu PLA Silk Gold. The matte PLA is my preferred choice for this print as I prefer how the white looks versus the regular PLA Basic or PLA Tough white filaments. The matte PLA is also suited to light sanding to help clean up parts without sanding marks being too apparent. Note that Bambu's Marble PLA is not compatible with 0.2mm nozzles so if you use this you must print the model with a 0.4mm nozzle.

Assembly

The model is designed to be assembled using dowel pins from the Bambu store. These aren't strictly necessary but allow you to disassemble the model if you wish. If you just need to use them for alignment of the parts and will glue it together, you can instead print some dowels using the cylinder primitives in Bambu Studio.

The holes are designed for a tight friction fit with the dowels and may require the use of a mallet to fully seat the dowels in the holes. You can adjust the XY hole compensation in Bambu Studio if you prefer a looser fit. You can also open the holes up slightly after printing with 2mm, 3mm, and 5mm drill bits.

Parts list:

4 x 2mm steel dowels 10mm long

10 x 3mm steel dowels 20mm long

6 x 5mm steel dowels 10mm long
