Maybe you've got a tonne of cash and absolutely splurged when you purchased your Accu-Tac bipod. It's awfully tempting since they're an absolutely awesome piece of gear.

… but maybe you really were stretching your budget and removed a couple of things from your cart, like me when I got my WB-5 and a pair of spikes to go with it.

I realllly liked the look of the claws too but I also wasn't sure how much use I'd get out of the spikes, let alone the claws, so I went without. But I certainly didn't forget about it.

So, I designed and printed these to suit the ‘G2’ spikes I purchased. Maybe they'll work, maybe they won't. I'm sure I'll test them out in a suitable circumstance one day. I'm only putting these on a 6.5 Creedmoor in a full chassis, so I expect they'll do fine in sand or soft ground with the actual spike taking most of the recoil. Even if they break it won't be the end of the world; it's not a lot of filament to make a pair.

In terms of printing, I found these printed best with the following settings:

  • PETG at least (if you can't do ASA). PLA might work but I expect will get more brittle, more quickly.
  • 0.20mm layer height. I did a few with 0.12mm layer height but it made the threads a bit tough.
  • Supports everywhere. I used organic supports but I'm sure anything would do. Haven't tried without supports so that might work… but I just haven't tested it.
  • Wider end on the build plate. Default orientation is probably going to be upside down once you load this into your slicer.
  • This may or may not be needed, but I used a large single-layer circle under the model (generated as a cylinder), which was merged. The contact on the bed shouldn't be too bad but it just takes one variable off the table as being a potential problem.

If you've got the cash, I certainly would encourage you to buy the genuine metal claws.

P.S. Sorry for the potato quality picture!
