I have been getting a lot of E02 errors from my Lay-Z-Spa inflatable hot tub recently. This generally means that the filter needs cleaned or replaced. I have tried various methods in the past such as putting them in the dish washer or the washing machine and have even 3D printed various designs available on the internet.
While waiting for new filters to arrive I decide to do another search and see if there was anything new. There are a lot of videos on YouTube where people put the filter on a broom handle over an orange crate or bucket and just turn the hose on it causing it to spin, but when I tried this the rubber on the filter stopped the spinning and I ended up turning it by hand.
Then I came across a video where someone had an expanding adapter that fitted inside the filter and allowed it to attach to a drill. They then put the filter in a bucket of water and ran the drill for a few seconds. I was surprised by the amount of dirt it extracted. There was no details on the device in the video details and I can't find the video again. It is not in my YouTube history so it must have been on another platform.
Update: I found the video on an eBay listing called Spa Filter Spinner Drill Attachment - by CoheriTECH
Anyway I decided to try and build something similar and that is what I present here. This is designed for the 80cm tall filters of the type used by Lay-Z-Spa and some other hot tub manufacturers.
There are only two parts to print. The filter holder and the top cap. The only other things needed are an M8x130mm bolt with a hex head and an M8 nut. The bolt goes through the center filter holder with the hex head fitting in the hex cutout in the base. The M8 nut fits in the hex cutout in the top cap. See the picture below.
To clean the filter, put the dirty filter on the holder and hold it in place by screwing on the top cap. Then attach the bolt to an electric / cordless drill and immerse the filter in a bucket of clean water. Run the drill for a few seconds to clean the filter.
See the video below to see a demonstration of it in action.
The internal cleaner shown at the end is my version of Cardblowers Lay-Z-Spa filter cleaner from Thingiverse. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5027546
It is not a design I'm proud of so I have never posted it anywhere. There are other versions that are probably better.
