Edit 03/01/2025 - I added a new version 1.1 based on feedback from my brother.  The main changes are:

  • Taller retaining walls for the unit so it better captures/holds the Next Wifi
  • Increase back depth from 4 to 6 mm to sit more flush with the electrical socket plate
  • Added more wire management features at the back for more options

NOTE: all photos are of the original version, sorry I don't have photo of the newer one in action; however, he did say it works better.

=================

My brother wanted a Google Nest Wifi holder that hangs off the wall socket, and has built-in wire management.  We searched online and found one available on Printables, but it's for the UK Nest that seems to have different sized plug according to comments, as well as what appears to be thicker electrical plate than in Canada (i.e. more space between front of the plate and the wall).

Additionally, I also wanted to make the wire management integrated without using cable ties, as well as reduce overall print time and complexity.  Therefore, I modelled my own version in SolidWorks 2023, and taking inspiration from the UK version on Printables as well as other commercial units on Amazon.

I only have a Prusa Mini, so this print barely fits when rotated 45 degrees.  Relevant print settings are:

  • Generic white PLA (softer material would probably be better, but I only have PLA)
  • 0.25 mm layer height overall, but 0.20 mm from height 31.00 to 34.00 (I wanted to make sure the friction lock region is reasonably accurate)
  • 3 perimeters (2 should be more than enough too)
  • 3 top/bottom layers (mostly a matter of cosmetics)
  • 10% gyroid infill
  • Enforced support only at a relevant region, “Snug" style on Prusa Slicer (I really don't like to use support in general, but at least this is easy to remove and also only on the back side the blemishes are not visible even without sanding)
  • Print time: 4h 55m for reference with no input shaping

After I made the print I sent it to my brother to try at his home, and he told me it's a snug friction fit (please see photos he supplied).  This is the intended behaviour, but as I made the model based on measurements only (I couldn't test fit since I don't have a Nest unit), it may be tighter for others.  In that instance, I would suggest sanding the print slightly and/or use more flexible materials.
