Cardboard Spools are not reliable on Bambus AMS. If the AMS tries to rewind the Filament, lot of the time it will lose grip on the Spool, slips and fails. I was annoyed by my solution to rewind it on empty plastic spools with a cordless drill and a printed adapter. But I was also not able to find a spool that is universal to use for different sizes of spools. The most are created for Sunlu, or Polymaker or something else, and the dedicated spool size of the manufacturer.

So I had to design my own.

My spool is self adjusting for different width from 45mm to 65mm (wich is the maximum you can use in BambuAMS either)

The only downside is the long print time with, in my case, around 15 hours (I do not care about the speed, you can figure out how to print it faster and put it in the comments). Feel free to print the non-threaded Spool part a little faster. You will need two tables anyway.

It will take around 175 grams of PLA

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. As usual you have to print threaded Parts with a very thin layer height. I used 0,08mm, three Wall loops and 15% Gyroid. Do not use supports, it wont be necessary
  2. To mount it to a new Cardboard Spool, you have to remove the sides ONE BY ONE! DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE CARDBOARD CORE!!!
  3. Lay the right side of the spool flat on the table
  4. Tear off the left side (upper) of the spool first, and insert the printed part (yes, it is normal that there is plenty of play between the printed part and the cardboard core)
  5. Tourn around the spool CAREFUL and lay it flat on the table
  6. Insert right side into spool and tighten the threaded core
  7. I will not hunt you, if you do it the other way around. I am not the spool direction police! But this is how I tested it in my AMS
  8. The “teeth” on the inside will bite into the Cardboard leftover from the spool and prevent slipping. DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE CARDBOARD CORE!!!
