This is my Hobo fishing reel's latest (and probably final) update. I've tweaked and played with all aspects of the model over the last year, and it has now been successfully tested by both me and my friends on several trips.

It is light and easy to stow away in a backpack. It is sturdy and reliable, offering storage space for hooks and (live) bait. It allows for easy storage of the 'active' hook so you don't have to reattach it every time, and a new (hook)top helps keep the line in place while traveling.

I hope you like it, and remember to show off your catch :-)

Here's a breakdown of the model

‘Top’ - The cap that goes over and protects the line while traveling.

‘Main’  - The main part of the model. It was heavily updated to provide maximum strength so as not to break when you get that really big bite (a friend of mine experienced this firsthand, where the top of the old model broke clean off).

Another major change to my earlier models is that I've removed the top lip (that made it easier to spool and keep the line in place). This turned out to be unnecessary, and by removing it and just having a ‘plain’ area for the line (see images), you now get better and more straight casts than before.

‘Hook Cap’  - A small new top to keep the stored 'active' hook and line safe and secure (see provided images in the carousel above).

‘Floater and Floater top’ - I've made a new, more secure floater (see images above), because, while testing the old model, its pin loosened mid-flight and detached. The new model ensures that it cannot happen, and also allows you to add weight to it (see below) for longer casts

‘Containers and lids’ - There are two containers (with accompanying lids). One small that's big enough for a few hooks and fasteners (see image above for my selection), and a bigger one that has room for a bit of dirt and a small number of live bait such as worms.

'Bottom' - I've fixed a model error so the threads now have a better fit. I've also made it slightly bigger for a better grip.

Printing the parts

  • The'Main' part should be printed standing, with100% infill for maximum sturdiness. You don't want the top to break off while trying to reel in that big catch :-) It does not require any supports.

  • The'Floater' and'Floater top' need 30-50% infill to ensure a watertight print (top layers). Not that if you pause the print halfway, there is room inside the model to put some weights in to make it slightly heavier and allow for longer casts. See the image in the carousel.

  • The rest can be printed with 10% infill.

  • Remember that the 'Lid.stl' is the same for both containers and must be printed twice.
