Normally after you catch a fish, you hold it up by the lower lip while you remove the hook and pose for pictures of your big catch. When you're out fishing for predatory fish, like big ocean fish, you need to wear gloves or use a tool like this to hold up the fish so they don't bite your fingers.

The tool also has a through-hole to tie a rope or paracord through for safe-keeping.

In addition to the printed parts, this build requires:

  • 4x M3x14mm screws
  • 4x M3 nuts
  • 16x M3 flat washers
  • Blue thread locker (loctite)

Assembly:

Connect all four parts, using double washers on both sides to help prevent the nuts from loosening. Use some thread locker on the nuts before tightening everything down, and DO NOT USE OR PLAY WITH THE TOOL UNTIL THE THREADLOCKER CURES. Screws should be snug but not too tight to open and close the jaws.

The tightness of the grip is heavily dependent on the tightness of the screws. If you do not use threadlocker, the grip will be poor, the nuts will loosen under use, and the tool will come apart.

Printing Advice:

All parts except the upper jaw/handle should print without support after auto-orienting in your slicer. The upper requires a teensy bit of support in one place:

Materials:

Print this tool with at least four walls/shells using a material that is resistant to water and sunlight. ASA is a great choice, as is Nylon if your printer is capable.

As for hardware, stainless and/or galvanized is preferable, especially if you plan to use this while fishing in salt water. Of course, if the hardware rusts in place, you don't have to worry about it getting loose over time :)
