We tweaked the model to allow our kids to start learning the basic guitar chords, since a baritone ukulele is tuned DGBE.
The first one we made is in the pictures below, and it had to be modified a lot to work for the much smaller strings. It also was not in tune at all frets (just like Tomek predicted).
We adjusted a lot around the nut and bridge attachments:
- 1.5mm action
- Nut notch sizes to: 0.03", 0.04", 0.04", 0.05"
- Bridge Insert compensation to adjust 4th string up 50¢ at 12th fret
- Bridge Insert uni-directional
- Bridge changed to through-tie for traditional style. 0.06" hole size
This one assembles and follows the exact same instructions as the original, and the document is included in the files. The only difference is how to attach the strings. Here is what to do:
- Pick a style of string base retention method. Inside body, or through-tie
- Use either Concert LowG strings, or Baritone specific strings
- We used Ernie Ball 2330's Nylon (28, 32, 40, 30W)
- Tie the first two loops of the 4th and 3rd strings (D and G) to the tuning pegs before winding This will help keep them retained better
- Wind as a usual guitar (using the windings to friction hold the string ends in place)
Let me know how your builds go and give feedback. Thank you
