I was looking for projects that would suit my bamboo skewer to 8mm rod model and got inspired by ShelXle's spool holder but it was for 10mm rods. I resized them in my slicer and they worked well. With an 8mm rod it is the perfect size for a skate bearing so you can use existing filament rollers like this one from M1324 or you can spend a weekend designing one using bamboo skewers. I've shared 2 designs
(Printed in orange PLA)
I didn't realise while designing it that it would create a convex shape (the skewers bow outwards making the middle wider than the edges). This looks nice and works well for cardboard spools with 2 contact points, but not as well for plastic spools that have a flat tube. This should be much faster to print and use less material, but is quite tricky to assemble. The skewers touch the bearing.
(Printed in black PLA)
This one has a larger diameter and minimal gaps between the skewers, this allows for a smoother rolling motion. And should work well for all spool types.
II haven't tested either of these designs for extended periods. If you value reliability you will want to glue everything together. The friction fit can work very well, but over time with heavy spools it might loosen and come apart.
Customisable, quick to print/reduce plastic, unique & aesthetically pleasing.
In the photos with the black PLA, There are 3x150mm rods x2 triangles joined together by 3x 120mm horizontal rods and a spool roller with 27 skewers cut to 90mm. Each rod is made from 3 skewers, you can also use a 4 skewer version. You can download the skewer to 8mm rod adapters here. The 4 skewer version is much better, but takes more time to cut and assemble.

The author remixed this model.
scaled down the connectors by 80% and layed them flat for easier printing.
Added a roller with bearings for smoother dispensing/aesthetics
