Upgrade your Volkswagen Golf 6's ashtray with a 3D printed wireless phone charging station. This design can be used for wireless charging, or simply as a phone holder. It should fit phones that are up to 165mm long, and 82mm wide.

You can either customize the provieded STP file if you have some CAD experience, or you can download the generic model and attach your own wireless charger with either glue, tape, or something else. The thickness of the area where you can attach the charging pad is 1.5 mm, so the charging performance might suffer slightly due to the increased distance. You could possibly just make a hole in the part that fits your charging pad if you don't want to sacrefice any performance.

The buttons fits right in, but i have made slots for the left button only, which was the only button in my car, yours might have more. If you need these slots, you could file them in the part your self, or edit the STP file. The slots are 1.6mm deep and 1.6mm wide.

To power the charging station, utilize the 12-volt cigarette lighter socket that is already in your car. You will need a 12V to 5 V USB converter. Personally i just broke the 12V cigarette lighter plug, and soldered the 12V to 5V USB converter to the plug.

Suggestion for 12V to 5V USB converter

The design is printed in two parts, and both needs supports to be printed. The surface finish doesn't matter much, since the areas that will be affected by the supports are not visible once it is installed. You will only see the cavity where the phone is stored. I found that using organic/tree supports gave the best results, and was also the easiest to remove. I suggest that the parts are printed in the orientation the stl files already provides.

I printed mine in PETG with a layer height of 0.3mm, 4 perimeters, and 20% infill and it took about 12 hours on my Prusa MK3S+. Other options might give a better result. Make sure to use a plastic that can handle fairly high temperatures, your car can get pretty hot inside.

Once you have finished the prints, you can glue them together if you want, but i found that once the cover/lining is installed it is not needed. Enjoy the convenience of wireless charging in your Golf 6!

Tools needed:

T20 Screwdriver (for the 2 screws holding the ashtray/Wireless charging console in place)

Soldering Iron

Panel Remover tool (Optional, just be careful not to scratch or break any of the panels.)

Glue (Optional)

Version 2:

I have added a version 2 as well. There are some small changes here and there, all for aesthetic purposes. The biggest change is the slot where the phone is placed.

I have also added an option to have a bracing underneath (Blue) the wireless charger. For this you need x2 M3x15 bolts, and x2 M3 heat inserts.

There will be no more updates on this as i do not own a VW golf anymore.
