Bevel Gears Display

This set of four meshed 90 degree bevel gears demonstrates the visual beauty of machines. Each gear is on a 5 mm aluminum shaft supported by two 695ZZ bearings for smooth operation. The shafts of the left and right gears are extended and feature knobs to allow the gears to be turned easily. Printing the set in vivid colors makes for a display that is simultaneously beautiful, fun, and educational.

The gears, spacers and knobs are intended to be lightly press-fit onto the shafts. You may need to adjust your print settings for the spacers to achieve this. 

The stand has cutouts on the corners to help prevent warping. Glue stick and organic supports are recommended for this part. There is also a hole for attaching a 10 mm bolt and nut(s) as needed to ensure the display doesn’t tip forward.

The bearing holders need supports. Organic supports are recommended for flat horizontal surfaces. I recommend NOT using supports for the screw holes. 

The back plate should be printed with a higher number of top layers if using white PLA to prevent the internal fill pattern from showing thru. I used 8 top layers.

Purchased materials and quantities

• 695Z bearings (8)
• 3 mm  x 20 mm tapping screw (8)
• 3 mm x 10 mm tapping screw (8)
• 3 mm x 8 mm tapping screw (4)
• 5 mm diameter aluminum shaft (at least 300 mm long) - cut to 42 mm and 61 mm lengths for shaft, 2 pcs each.
• M10 x 20 bolt and nut attached in back of stand for stability.
   

Key parameters:

• 0.20 mm layer height (0.30 mm recommended for stand to reduce printing time.)
• 3 perimeters
• Cubic infill at 20%
• Supports as noted above
• Filament: I used PETG for the gears and PLA for everything else
