This is a case designed to hold one watch using the Gridfinity system.

I recommend using one of my remixed 1x2 Gridfinity Watch Holders, which is linked below.

https://www.printables.com/model/967889-gridfinity-watch-stand-v30-for-larger-watches-thir

With the TPU liner installed, this watch case is approximately 46.5mm in width, where the crown of a watch would typically sit (though it widens out by a couple mm if the holder is flipped so the watch faces rearwards.  Without the TPU liner, the width is approx. 49.4-51mm.  If the TPU liner is not used, the inside of the lid could be lined with felt to protect the watch.  The TPU liner is designed to help limit vertical, and some sideways movement of the watch stand, so if it is removed to gain some width, the watch will have more room to bump around in the case (which is not a good thing).  If you have a rather large watch, then the three watch case (shown below) may be a better fit (which is about 45.9mm for the center, and 46.8mm for the outside slots).

Although this is designed as a 12U case, it will not fit bins, due to the way the lid is designed.  It is specifically designed as a watch case.  Although there is only a gasket version, it will also work without a TPU gasket.  The gasket will not make it water tight, since there are too many factors that go into a water tight print and gasket.  More flexible TPU may help with sealing, however I only have shore 95A to test with (which is on the hard side for TPU).  If you have any suggestions on how to make a more water resistant gasket, please let me know.

Additionally, this watch case may look rugged, but please do not put your watch in it, and expect that it will keep it safe if it's rolled around.  The TPU liner in the lid helps to stabilize the watch holder, and may help protect the watch, but without the liner, expect that the watch will be able to move side to side.

Assembly and Materials:

There is a build guide on my blog with some tips on assembly.  The instructions are for a similar case with more features, but it shows how to assemble the latches and hinges.

This case requires the following hardware:

(1) M3 x 12mm SHCS  (these hold the latch “cleats” to the top of the case)
(1) M3 x 20mm SHCS (for the latch)
(2) M3 x 20mm SHCS (for the hinge)
(1) M3 x 30mm SHCS (for the latch)
(8) 6x2mm Cylinder Magnets (optional  - see notes)
(SHCS = Socket Head Cap Screws)

Printing Info:

I have included a 3MF with the files set up on plates, which should help with printing.

PLA can be used for the boxes, but PETG is recommended for the latches.  The gasket and lid inset should be run in TPU (though it will still close without a gasket as well).  A 3MF 5 plate profile is included.  It uses the following settings:

  • PLA for most parts, but PETG for the latches and TPU for the gasket and lid insert
  • 0.4mm X1 Carbon profile
  • 3 Walls
  • Arachne wall generator
  •  inner/outer/inner for the wall ordering
  • 15% Rectilinear infill, with infill combination enabled
  • Textured PEI build plate

AMS is not required, but here is how it is set up in the profile:
1 = PLA - Polymaker Galaxy Blue Polylite
2 = PETG - eSun Solid Orange
3 = PLA - Light Blue
4 = PLA - Duramic Gray
5 = TPU - Black (TPE can also be used - see below)

There is a blank label included.  You can add your own text to this label using the text tool in the slicer.  There is also a label designed to be used with 12mm Brother P-Touch (or similar) labels.
Note that TPU is required for the gasket and the lid insert (with the hexagons).

Tips and Other Stuff:

TPU can stick very well to bare textured PEI, and become difficult to remove.  Therefore I recommend that you test that your printer can run TPU without issues first.  Although the 3MF is set up for a textured PEI plate, please use a smooth or the Bambu Engineering plate if possible for the TPU gasket, and apply glue as a release agent.

To install the gasket, I used the cap of a sharpie to press the TPU gasket into place.  The gasket has grooves on top, so make sure to verify the position before installing it  Start by pressing in the middle of the gasket along all 4 sides, then once it's set in position, press in the corners.

If you find that the latch is too tight, and the case will not close without risking breaking something, please try the alternate latch, which is included in the 3MF (or you can use the STL named “Gridfinity_LATCHES_L-V2_PLUS_0-5MM.stl”).  This latch is 0.5mm longer and should help.  If you need to use this alternate part, please post in the comments how well it worked.

I included some optional cleats, which slide into the back of the case and could be used to help secure it.  I would not recommend hanging the case from a wall though, but that may be possible.  There is a plain version of the cleat, and one with holes for #8 wood screws.

It was mentioned in the comments that magnets around watches is not a good idea, so take that into consideration when deciding to use them or not.

Big thanks to JGowins for taking the chance on testing this out for me and for letting me use his case in one of the profile pics (see the make in the comments).  In the comments it was strongly suggested to run the print in PETG with 50% infill.  At a minimum, I suggest running the latch and label parts in PETG, using 50-100% infill on those parts for added strength.

I've since also tested this design, and it works well.  I used a softer eSun TPE 83A filament, and had to uncoil the TPE off the spool when I ran the gaskets, since the friction of the spool rollers and bowden were enough to cause problems.  The pic below shows my setup for running this TPE.  I used a short length of bowden in the extruder, and then I just unspooled the required length of filament (about 6m), and carefully laid it out beside the printer (off the spool).  For the eSun TPE 83A, I used the “Generic TPU” profile in BambuStudio, with the “Max Volumetric Speed” set to 1.5 mm^3/s, and used the engineering plate (with gluestick).  The temp for the plate can be set down lower like 20°C after the first layer.  The included profile is set up for TPU, since that is more common.

Other stuff:

If you need some bins for small parts, the following bins with covers are a good option to use with the Box For Stuff 20 bin and 25 bin cases (or other 6U tall cases):

  1. 1x1, 1x2 (3 Compartment) and 1x4 (6Compartment) bins with lids (3U, 6U and 9U) - version 2.1
  2. 1 compartment 2x1 (6U) bin with a magnet pickup tool
  3. 1x2, 1x3, 1x4 (6U, 9U and 12U) Lidded Bin for Stuff with Latch Version 2.0
  4. 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 (6U, 9U  and 12U) Lidded Bin for Stuff with Latch Version 2.0
  5. 3x3, 3x4 (6U, 9U  and 12U) Lidded Bin for Stuff with Latch Version 2.0
  6. 4x4, 4x5 (6U, 9U  and 12U) Lidded Bin for Stuff with Latch Version 2.0

Change Log:

6-29-2024: Updated the version to 2.1 - changed the gasket and base to use a thicker gasket.

8-17-2024: Updated the description to add the attribution and Zach Freedman's original design.  (this is a work in progress)

10-24-2024:  Added an alternate latch, which is 0.5mm longer and may help if it is very difficult to latch the case closed.  This part is named “Gridfinity_LATCHES_L-V2_PLUS_0-5MM.stl”, and is also included in the 3mf.
