I was solving a problem with a door that always hit the wall with the handle when opened. But at the same time, because of the draught, they did not stay open when I tried to ventilate the room. Since I wanted to solve both problems at once, the doorstop & hold was created.

The stop consists of a printed part (I only tested PLA), a round 15mm metal plate attached with instant glue and pieces of self-adhesive felt/rubber to dampen the door slamming (e.g. this floor protection). The printed magnet pocket contains a 20×6×2 mm neodymium magnet.

Both parts are attached with mounting tape to the door/floor.

Print Tips

  • 0.2mm layer height
  • 4 perimeters, 20 % infill
  • no supports/brims/rafts

Notes

  • The magnet is not strong enough to catch a door that is opened sharply (it will probably bounce back off the doorstop). But if the door is slowly opened all the way to the stop, the magnet will latch on and resist the force of the draught that would otherwise close the door.
  • The door should be hung at a minimum height of 7 mm and a maximum height of 13 mm (if higher, the contact area between the magnet and the metal plate will be too small; if lower, it will scrape against the doorstop).
  • Mount the stop to the floor at the same angle as the opening angle of the door is so that the magnet contacts the metal plate completely.
