The Focus Eye is a completely internal focus adjustment for the Game Boy Camera. This project is great for changing the focus on the Game Boy Camera without disassembly! Also allows for easy macro photography.

UPDATES

  • 2024-09-03 - Snap fit models tested and confirmed to work with resin prints.
  • 2024-07-31 - Added snap fit option to avoid use of adhesive. Added details on OEM locktite (thanks to Rembrandx for the tips).
  • 2024-05-11 - Initial uploaded version

Print is in 3 parts:

  1. shell - replaces the original front shell of the eyeball
  2. lens - a mechanism that fits around the original lens
  3. grip - the external portion spun to adjust focus

Please be aware: this is NOT compatible with early Game Boy Pocket Camera versions that lack the lens flanges (typically the Japanese versions with GameBit screws)! If your original internal lens is completely round, it is NOT compatible.

Optionally, I have designed a Game Boy Camera lens wrench to assist with loosening the lens, if needed.

Typically, the original manufacturer sealed the lens with some sort of locktite/thread lock to prevent the lens from jostling out of focus - once the lens is loosened & removed, I recommend removing any leftover glue in the threads & applying silicone grease (not oil) to allow smoother rotation.

Per images attached for instructions on how to build (also included in the zip file):

  1. insert “focus eye lens” inside the “focus eye shell”
  2. (NOTE: adhesive not needed with snap fit version) apply adhesive along the flat edge of the “focus eye lens” that is exposed outside the “focus eye shell”. Be careful to not accidentally adhere “lens” to “shell”
  3. align “focus eye grip” pegs to coincide with “focus eye lens” wait for adhesive to dry, if applicable
  4. once adhesive has sealed (waiting for it to dry, etc.), insert the original lens. Spin “grip” until the the lens catches on the flanges (the lens falls completely within the “shell”, fitting as per original front eyeball shell)
  5. reassemble Game Boy Camera as normal
