Summary

This is a frame for a Raspberry Pi based / DIY based IoT kit. The frame makes the IoT kit cooler, more compact, and accurate by putting sensors in an appropriate position.

The IoT kit costs around 250 USD (2022 estimate) for the hardware but the software is free.

The major functions of the IoT kit are below:

  1. Remote control from your personal computer or smartphone;
  2. Taking photos and recording essential parameters like CO2 concentration, light intensity, temperature, humidity, and water depth. All measurements taken/recorded can be saved to Google Cloud;
  3. Sending measurement summaries and email alerts.

The IoT kit could be useful for the purposes below:

  1. Monitoring plants (photos, CO2, etc.) and alerting you when a parameter goes above/below the criteria you set;
  2. Monitoring and alerting you of CO2 concentration in the room, office, or restaurant to prevent the spread of infections, like COVID-19.

Sensors compatible with the IoT kit:

  • light intensity sensor: BH1750FVI;
  • temperature and humidity sensor: SHT31;
  • CO2 sensor: CO2-mini;
  • depth sensor (to measure the water depth of the planter): VL6180;
  • webcam: C270n is recommended, but many of other webcams are compatible.

Screws and nuts for the IoT kit:

  • for holding sensors: M2 screws (8mm length) and M2 nuts;
  • for holding Raspberry Pi and GPIO expansion board: M2.5 screws (at least 18mm length) and M2.5 nuts.
