Slug fences are used specially for 

• young plants
• plants specially liked by slugs 
• during warm/wet weather conditions
• when big slug populations

You can buy slug fences on the market. They use less plastic then my experimental version. It is good to use as little plastic as possible in your garden (due CO2/microplastic).
