So I needed to convert from the Bowden setup because I was struggling to get decent consistent prints and was tired of constantly fixing a clogged tube and the fitting on the extruder broke not allowing the tube to stay in place (the final straw, and I saved the broken piece, you’ll see why later). I purchased the cheaper direct drive conversion because if I was going to spend the money on a sprite I was just going to buy a new printer.
Anyways, the extruder that came on would strip my filament unless I was running at super low retraction speed, making simple prints take forever, or still failing entirely. I had the dual gear set up from when I purchased it used with the Bowden setup. So I drew up this adapter to install it on my current setup. I did make a provision for the spring screw as well, however, it's a tight fit with the bolt hole and has enough room for the screw, but mine printed just fine
What you will need to install
M3-.5 x35mm length screws x2
longer length of PTFE tube
Ideally, a broken fitting that no longer secures the tube
I would strongly recommend printing it at 100% infill. I printed with a .4 nozzle, .2 layer height, in PLA but PETG or ASA may be more suited to the task. I'd also recommend that broken PTFE fitting I mentioned, just to make disassembly easier, should something happen.
I've been fine-tuning the retraction speeds and lengths and getting much better and more consistent results.
Check the tightness of the screws every so often as the material flexes and shrinks from the heat.
