I designed this to mount my phone on an existing mount, but on the vent instead of the CD tray of the radio.
The ball joint has a diameter of 17mm, and the pin has a 3mm hole for inserting a steel rod. This was necessary in order to make it stiffer, there was too much movement in the assembly without it. It also has space for pressing in an M3 heat set insert.
All parts except the TPU buffer are to be printed in a heat and UV-resistant material, like ASA. For the TPU buffer I'd suggest a pretty soft TPU, mine is 30D.
Instructions:
- Cut a 3mm steel rod to 65mm length and insert it into the pin. You may need to hammer it in and/or drill out the hole with a 3mm drill bit to make it fit. After this press in the M3 insert.
- Put the lock nut of the phone mount over the pin before placing the pin inside the hole of the vent insert and screw it in using a countersunk head M3x8 bolt.
- Carefully unclip and remove the silver ring around the vent and the vent itself. Some gentle prying with plastic tools should suffice.
- Position the TPU buffer behind the vent insert like it is shown in the second picture and clip the the insert into the dashboard.
- Clip in the silver ring over the vent insert.
