Voron V0.2 R1 Custom Idlers Pin Mod

Building upon my Pin Mod for the XY Gantry I have added the Idlers to the line up of modded parts!

As the Pin Mod Gantry uses less space the idlers were lengthened to keep the original Y limit of 120mm.
This in turn has given me the room needed to create a Pin Mod for the Idlers too!

But why use pins instead of the provided screws?

• Mechanically the Pins will have a much closer dimension to the bearings inner race so reducing free play in the motion system.
• It also removes the possibility of over tightening the Bearing Stack and causing drag on the motion system.
• But I think mostly it is for kudos!

to keep things simple I used the same length pins as used in the XY Gantry pins.

2 off 28mm long x 3mm dia silver steel rod

only 2 of the original M3 x 35 BHCS screws will be used

2 will be changed to M3 x 12 BHCS screws.

The Bearing stacks have been moved back 6mm to allow for the OEM fixing points on the front of the idler (lets face it, that threaded hole in the extrusion is too good to waste!) and this is where we use the M3 x 12mm Screws.
this also means we have reduced the overall belt length by 12mm so after install is complete you will need to remove the slack and excess.

as we had some space now in front of the bearing stack i have removed the gap between the upper and lower printed parts to give a more stealthy look and provide support for the upper printed part ensuring a nice even 9mm gap for the bearing stack.

i have added in locating tabs on the top of the lower printed part to help align the upper and lower printed parts together ( these should be a nice press fit )

NOTE.
once you have fitted this mod to revert back to the OEM idlers you will require new belts to fit.

please follow the standard Voron Print Setting

4 x perimeter

5 top / bottom layers

40% infill

Material - ABS / ASA

Print Files have been laid on a V0 bed so simply download, slice and print!

After printing out the parts you may need to ream out the 3mm holes for the pins / dowls to get them to fit.
I have made the tolerance quite tight to have a good fit for the pins / dowls as you do not want any play in this area.
my advice would be to measure the drill bit / reamer to make sure that it is not bigger than your pin / dowl or you will run into problems.
as these parts are small I would suggest that you do the reaming by hand and not with a drill.
it is far too easy to go over board this way.

Installation.

assuming you are retrofitting this mod…

• using just the lower idler printed part, fit the M3 x 35 BHCS screw and align with the Pre-loaded Nut in the top of the extrusion (leave it loose though)
• slide it into position so you are able to fit the M3 x 12 BHCS screw and tighten it down
• push the Pin into the centre hole just behind the M3 x 12 BHCS screw
• add the bearing stack ( 1 x washer - 2 x bearings - 1 x washer )
• remove the M3 x 35 BHCS screw
• add the upper printed idler part ( the locating tabs should be a nice press fit to hold it all straight )
• add the M3 x 35 BHCS screw (hopefully you haven't been moving the printer) and the nut should be where you need it. now tighten down.
• make sure the bearing stack rotates nice and freely ( any binding here will cause problems )
• add belts and tension as required

well done for making it this far, you must seriously love modding your V0!
