Star map created using d3 javascript library and cut on a laser cutter. The shape is called a Deltoidal Hexecontahedron. It uses 3d printed connectors to assemble all the pieces. Note that the starmap is an inside out projection on the celestial sphere. If you where to assemble it with the map on the inside and put a camera in the center then you would be able to the stars as you can see them from earth.

Inlcuded:

  • svg file with the map tiles that can be used create laser cut tiles out of wood.
  • stl files for the connectors
    • 4 point connector (20 needed)
    • 5 point connector (12 needed)
    • 3 point connector (30 needed)

needed:

  • m2 x 6mm screws (230 needed)
  • laser cutter
  • wood 3.6mm x 1000mm x 600mm

This produces a basketball sized ball. The svg can be scaled but then the screw hole size has to be adapted to match the screws you want to use.

I got the idea for this from a similar project where they created a dymaxian world map.
