This is a 3D printed version of the jiggle siphon - an easy way to siphon fluids without the need to first prime the tube. Simply shake the submerged jiggle siphon and fluid will start flowing through the tube. It works as long as the source of the fluid is higher than it's destination!
I made this because I needed a way to pump diesel out of a fuel tank. This won't work in a container with a small amount of fluid, it needs space to move up and down during priming phase.
WARNING: if used to pump fuel (diesel, gasoline) you need to use appropriate filament that won't dissolve! I used pure nylon, however PETG should also work.
Required parts:
bottom_part (in print files)
1_2in_10mm_tube OR 1_2in_12mm_tube - a 3D printed standard NPT thread adapter to 10 or 12mm tube - you can also use a standard one, it should fit to the standard NPT thread
10 or 12 mm inner diameter tube of desired length (or appropriate diameter tube if you're using a standard tube adapter). If you intend to use it to transfer fuel make sure the material of the tube doesn't dissolve in fuel - I used PVC!
marble (or any other similar heavy ball) 16 mm in diameter (doesn't need to be exactly 16 mm, the closer the better)
Printing instructions:
if you need help see attached settings.3mf file
all parts were printed at 0,15 mm layer height
the bottom part needs no supports. Use alligned seam. For nylon I used a brim (and enclosure). The threaded part needs appropriate cooling. When using nylon all parts need to be scaled in all directions - for me scaling factor of 101,2% worked best
after printing I recommend using sandpaper to remove the seam on the marble sealing surface, this reduces leakage
the hose adapter needs supports from the build plate
Assembly:
insert the marble into the bottom part
screw on the tube adapter to the bottom part
attach the tube
Operating instructions for transferring fluid from container A to B:
place container A higher than B
insert the free end of the tube in container B
insert the end of the tube with the jiggle siphon in container A
quickly move the jiggle siphon up and down in the liquid. Continue doing this until the entire tube gets filled with fluid and it starts freely flowing
make sure the sihpon stays submerged in the fluid until container A is emptied. Once it pulls in air it will stop siphoning
jiggle the siphon a bit so all fluid from the tube flows out. If pumping fuel to prevent spillage use a rag to wipe the tube as you're pulling the siphon out of the container.
