This model is a hexagonal tiling of the Continental US (Mercator projection) where the height of each tile represents the average height of the land (in log scale).

There is a simpler tiling (approximately 60x28 tiles) in a 1 ft / 305mm size and a 2 ft / 610mm size.  There is a denser tiling (approximately 105x240 tiles) in a 4 ft / 1220mm size.

Each map has been cut into chunks along the hexagonal boundaries so that the chunks fit on specific printer beds.  For the 305mm and 610mm sizes, Mini, MK4, and XL versions are available.  For the 1220mm size, MK4 and XL versions are available.

Each piece has a number inscribed in the back.  These numbers correspond to the labels on the SVG layout images. Their purpose is to help you assemble the pieces accurately.

Print parameters:

  • A very low infill is needed as the parts are not structural
  • Only two perimeters are needed
  • Set the top infill to HIlbert curve or Octogram Spiral for the cleanest results, although the slicing can take a long time with these settings on.
  • If you want colors to represent different heights, simply set the color changes at the desired layer heights.  Make sure you set them the same for all pieces.
  • If you want a taller model, simply increase the Z scale of the parts in the slicer.  Make sure you set the heights for all the parts the same .
  • You may get a warning about print stability – this is because of the number label inscribed as a single layer on the bottom of each part.  You can safely ignore this warning.
