I have found my 2017 Sub Legacy has a two port USB 'hub' in the cubby below the dash, which is not compatible with the adapter cables available on Crutchfield (Metra AX-SUBUSB2 USB Port Adapter or IDataLink Maestro’s equivalent cable).
The issue is Some models of Subaru have a straight through USB port and some models actually use a two port ‘hub’. These adapter cables are not compatible with a hub.
What's nice about the two USB cables coming off the back of the Alpine is that they have female connectors and are 3.5 feet in length. This is long enough to reach the glove box in the armrest. What I also like about this solution is it is a direct connection to the Alpine without signal loss from other cables and adapters. In addition the armrest glove box in the Subaru has pass throughs for your USB IPhone, generic cables.
I 3D modeled a panel that will nicely hold those connectors. You simply need to make a small rectangular hole in the glove box next to the accessory power outlet (cigarette lighter outlet). If you are careful you can make the hole with a dremel without removing the armrest.
This model consists of the following parts:
Front Panel - This is the front of the panel and presents the outlets and has the bottom halves of the two USB ports
TopUSBCover x2 - This is the top cover(s) of the USB ports. Print two of these
NEW AlpineUSB_Panel_Proud_V6 - This is an alternate Front Panel that sits out from the front wall of the center console glove box. It's also a little beefier where the trays join the panel. Use either this one or the ‘Front Panel’ which sits flush to the front wall.
Pressure Block - this goes between the top cover of the bottom port and the bottom half of the top port. This solidifies both ports as a single block so that once you bind it, it is structurally sound.
Template - This will help you position where your hole will be. The outer edge is the outer size of the front panel and the inside edge is the hole size you have to cut. I did this carefully without removing the armrest with a Dremel, but there is no guarantee there isn't wiring behind the plastic in your vehicle. Do this at your own risk!
Assembly instructions:
Warning use a high temperature filament such as PETG or PAHT-CF. Do not use PLA in your car it can melt at a relatively low temperature.
