I've made a few fun modifications to the cheap amazon crossbows you can find to make them a little more functional (and fun) to use in larping.

The two that can always be used are the draw guide and the belt slide. The draw guide replaces the sight at the end of the crossbow. There's a 3d printable draw stop that can be super glued onto your bolts (or arrows) for really sturdy, correctly sized, and easy stops, that when paired together hold your bolts snugly in place.

The belt slide replaces the current sights that are on the crossbow, as they're not super.. functional. It then and screws into place and you can wear it at your belt when you're fighting. When everything's properly attached and you have some athletic tape around the draw stop, they tend to stay in place quite well.

If you're willing to saw through the trigger guard (the whole thing is plastic so it's very easy), you can also replace the original trigger by popping out the pin holding it in with the larger original trigger file.

-Vertical handle-

If you want to make the fun (albeit a bit silly) vertical handle modification, you have everything here to make that happen too. It aligns the limbs with the handle, which makes it a little more subtle at your hip, and also makes it less likely falling on your hip would hurt as much. To do this, you actually keep the original trigger on the crossbow. You'll have to saw off (I used a band saw) the entire actual handle piece along the natural ridge the top part makes, add the “new trigger” mechanism so it can be pulled with a vertical handle.

Materials:

In general, you can obviously use any hardware to make this work as long as it fits, but here's the ones I used (I'm mostly sure on these sizes)

For just the belt clip and draw guide:

  • 1x 10-24 x 1-1/2" and lock nut
  • 1x M4x8

For the handle attachment:

  • same as above
  • 2x 10-24 x 1" and nuts
  • 1x M4x20 and nut
  • 1x M3x20 and nut

For some of these, and depending on your printer, you might need slightly longer screws, or to drill a hole a bit wider, but overall, it's a pretty simple modification!
