History

I've been working on optimizing my wingspan storage and gameplay since I got the base game. I printed some optimization tools and designed some of my own for the base game, but wanted to keep my organizers when I started incorporating the expansions. There are a lot of features in this setup that let you be very particular about how things get stored.

Below I'll give you a parts list and packing instructions. This organization system is for UNSLEEVED cards, and all ORIGINAL components. I do not know if upgraded components will work with this system. If you try it, drop a comment in the Makes to let everyone know!

Technically it doesn't fit perfectly closed. The box lid rests just a little on the components below it, but it's so little I don't worry about it.

Exclusions

I was not able to fit 100% of the parts from all games in the original box. The list of parts that don't fit:

  • All dedicated automata parts
  • Four game boards
  • All instructions and appendices
  • One set of dice
  • All scorecards

It is possible that you could find space for the automata cards. I'll note the part that they might fit in the packing section. I didn't try because I never use the automata.

I chose to remove the original game boards and keep the Oceania and Asia boards in the box. These boards can be played with or without the Oceania expansion and provide more balanced gameplay in my opinion.

Instructions and appendices are searchable online.

The Oceania dice can act as standard dice if you ignore the nectar. With this, there's no need to have a full three sets of dice available.

Not being able to fit scorecards is a bummer. I have an excel sheet that I use for points tracking in other games, so I just use it with this one too. I'll be working on a dedicated sheet for Wingspan and when I finish it I'll link it here.

Printing Instructions

Settings

The prints you see are a combination of PLA and PET. I haven't found one material that's better than the other for these organizers, print what you know. While I used an MMU machine to get the pretty multicolors, you should be able to print everything without the multicolor. If you're really intrepid you still could do multicolor without MMU, but it will be time intensive.

I print heavy duty for everything, so I had a minimum of 3 walls and 1mm top and bottom. Otherwise I just ran the Prusa PLA/Prusament PET presets for 0.2 Quality.

Filament

All PLA is Polyterra in Matte White, Arctic Teal, or PLA+ Black. Colored inlay on the player organizers is Overture Silk except yellow, which is Locyfens color changing. The solid blue components are Prusament Chalky Blue PET.

Packing Instructions

Starting from empty box:

Step 1: Base Layer

Pick your 7 player mats. Put those in the top right corner of the box.

The Birdhouse Egg Container can fit 60 eggs comfortably. I put the Asia eggs in one side and the Europe & Oceania eggs in the other.

The Birdhouse Egg Container slots perfectly into the top of the birdhouse. Put the birdhouse with these eggs in the top left corner of the box.

Step 2: Primary Organizer

The primary organizer holds all your food, round end objectives, dice, and one of the First Player tokens. There are two notable organizational features here:

  1. The food and the nectar will all fit in the bottom tray (Food Storage Organizer Remix). However, if you're picky like me you'll keep the nectar separate in the main organizer (Main Organizer Remix) so you can play without Oceania and reduce confusion. The nectar does have to be stacked neatly to all fit in the main organizer.
  2. The Round End objectives can be separated into a Base Game stack, an Expansions stack, and a Duet/Asia stack. This lets you keep them better separated for quicker setup of whatever variant you're playing.

Once everything is in the organizers, stack the organizer together and put it in the bottom left corner of the box. Note: only one of the First Player tokens fits in this organizer. I don't technically think there's a need for both, but if you like to have both in the box put the other one on one side or the other of the birdhouse.

Step 3: Cards & Eggs

The Card Case and Card Lid act as a substitute for the original parts from the main game. This case is able to hold each of the expansion bird cards in one slot. As pictured, Oceania cards are in the leftmost slot, Europe in the middle and Asia in the right.

The Card Holder can be used to house all of the cards from the base game. This includes all Bird and Objective cards.

The 6-7 player expansion Active Player tokens can fit in multiple places in the box, but I throw them in above the birds to keep track of them more easily. You can also put them in by the birdhouse if you don't like this location.

Stack the Card Case and Card Holder on the left side of the player mat, as shown.

The egg cartons shown were originally printed for just the base game. It turns out they fit just perfectly on end between the Card Holder and the right side of the board.

Step 4: Player Organizers

The Player Organizers are my favorite parts I've made. These are my original design to hold food and turn markers. They can be used to store the turn markers, and make play nice on crowded tabletops to delineate player resources. I designed a new unit for packing the all the expansion Objective cards. You may be able to put the Automata cards in here too, but I haven't tried. The lids are not strictly necessary but I find help a little bit with shifting markers during transit.

These fit in two stacks of three along the right side of the box.

If you're trying to fit more parts inside the box, this is the place to remix. Delete my player organizers and figure out something that will fill this space to more efficiently pack in whatever you're shooting for.

Step 5: Duet Tokens

There isn't enough room, as far as I can tell, to have two more player organizers for Duet. So I made a couple of storage containers for the parts so they can slot in the little space between the cards and the player organizers. The yin-yang tokens go in the tall box (Duet Token Holder Body). The turn markers go in the Duet Turn Count Body, with one body for each color. The caps for all three holders are the same cap. You may have to play around with the cap size settings to get the right fit over the different bodies depending on your printer calibration. The nice part is the caps print in about a half hour.

Step 6: Round End

The reason we have the Player organizers up against the right wall now becomes apparent. Use the space above the cards and Duet tokens to put the Round End goals board. You can put the dial for the 6-7 Player Expansion turn marker below it.

Step 7: Flat Pack

There's still a little space above the cards, so put the cardboard for the expansion birdfeeder and available birds on top of the round end organizer. You can put the duet board above these boards.

You did it! The box now closes! Mostly. Enough to put in the closet.

As a bonus, this box is now dense enough to be used as a kettlebell for your workout.
