A small fidget built around the idea of a dual direction helical gear that can mesh with many types of gears in different orientations. My original inspiration was trying to make a helical gear that could mesh either perpendicularly or parallelly.

There are many configurations to chose for the gears. Follow the guide below. (Or don't if you're feeling adventurous)

For printing:

  • Print “Gear 1”
  • Print 3 x “Pin”
  • Print one of the two holders
  • For each perpendicular slot in the holder, print either “Gear 2” or “Gear 3”
  • For each parallel slot in the holder, print any gear other than “Gear 1"

Print Settings:

  • Infill ≥ 5%
  • No supports needed if printed on the flat middle edge

My personal favorite configuration is “Holder Type 1” with perpendicular “Gear 2” and parallel “Gear 5”.

 

There are two types for the holder:

  • “Holder Type 1”: Central gear with one side gear perpendicular and one side gear parallel
  • “Holder Type 2”: Central gear with both side gears perpendicular

 

Gears:

  • “Gear 1”: Dual direction helical gear. I don't know of a better name for this. It is basically the intersection of a clockwise and counterclockwise helical gear.
  • “Gear 2”: Clockwise helical gear.
  • “Gear 3”: Counterclockwise helical gear.
  • “Gear 4”: Inverse of Gear 1. Basically the combination of a clockwise and counterclockwise helical gear.
  • “Gear 5”: Herringbone gear.

 

If the peg does not fit snugly, print “LoosePeg” or “TightPeg” depending on if the normal peg is should be looser or tighter.
