The OpenMower mainboard (mine is v0.11.x from the Gadgets By Vermut kit) has a neo pixel LED to show the various states. However, when the housing is closed, you cannot see it from the outside.
I had transparent polycarbonate 3d printer filament at home and tried to use it as a light guide to make the display visible from the outside. It works surprisingly well.

The system consists of the following simple components:

  • the clip that encloses the LED and fixes the light guide over it (print it in the same orientation as shown on the picture, carefuly slide it over the led)
  • Light guide feed-through through the housing (drill a 4mm hole, press it in from the outside, it fits quite tight, fix and seal it with super glue to the housing from the inside)
  • a corner piece for better guidance of the filament (I used a second print of the clip, cut off the base and pushed it over the filament)
  • the light guide itself (about 15cm 1,75mm filament, push it completely into the clip an into the feed-through, fix and seal it with super glue)

I used very little glue to prevent the filament from becoming opaque. I'm not afraid of the housing leaking and I think the glue will hold tight - but time will show ;)
