LATEST UPDATE!
August 18, 2025
NEW stable window clips. These have an extra hook that lock onto the trim piece where the interior lighting is. This keeps the front of the clip in place as you pull your cup out, but also opens up the window clip usefulness for other things, like mounting a radio/walkie talkie.
NEW “rotated” adapter. This adapter is rotated around the Z axis 60 degrees. The initial use for this is to point the face of a radio toward the driver when used with the new stable window clips. The radio clip is part of the molle panel remix.
Why Cup Holders?
The second row of a Rivian is seriously lacking in places to put drinks. If you've got 3 passengers, you can't use the middle fold-down where the only cup holders are. So I've designed a system of clips and cups to be able to add drink holders pretty much anywhere you can think of. If I've missed a location, let me know and I can make more. Just choose which size cup you need and where you want to put it and attach the appropriate clip for that location.
Printing
I'm including my .3mf for PrusaSlicer with the settings I use. Feel free to adjust as needed, but here's also a breakdown of what's included in the .3mf and how I printed what's in the photos:
Use PETG, ASA, or ABS for better heat resistance and for the cups to flex a bit.
general settings
0.4mm or 0.6mm nozzle
0.2mm STRUCTURAL profile
4 perimeters
gyroid infill pattern at 15%
40mm/s small perimeter and external perimeter speeds to get more consistent outer surface finish
clip settings
each clip should be positioned on it's side for proper strength
enable (snug) supports on build plate only
cup settings
no supports are necessary but for the larger cups it can be helpful to add paint-on organic supports about half way up the front arms to keep them from flexing while printing. These are now included in the .3mf file.
0.6mm nozzle + 0.32mm layer height can speed things up
2mm minimum bottom shell thickness (so it does not print 1 layer of infill then have to do a bridging layer)
clamp settings
no supports needed
0.6mm nozzle + 0.32mm layer height can speed things up
CUPS
There are two cups that should fit pretty much any size drink you want. I've tested them with nearly everything in our house and one of the two sizes works for nearly everything. The only exception are the super wide coffee cups that are wider than a 40oz water bottle.
The regular size is your everyday size which accommodates most normal cups like you'd get while on the go or even the double-insulated pint glasses like the green Stanley one in the photos.
The large size is meant to handle your 40oz water bottles. It's also a great size for coffee cups with handles on the side (white coffee cup in photos).
As you can see, I've provided several other sizes as well at the request of folks. You should use the ID Bottom dimension if trying to fit a cup so you know it can sit flush to the bottom.

CLAMPS
These are essentially bottomless cups. They're just the top portion, used to hold a beverage in place laterally, but without having to support the full weight. They're most useful in the front storage area where a water bottle can rest on the floor, but this keeps it from falling over. They're also designed specifically for use with the angle adapter and the storage-bracket.
When choosing a size, you probably want one a bit smaller than you expect so that your water bottle or beverage has to expand the clamps a bit to provide a stronger hold. I use the regular size (79mm) for my Rivian water bottle (85mm) and that works great.
CLIPS
There are clips for as many locations in my R1S that I could find. If you have another suggestion or something doesn't work out, just let me know and I can add another one. Each clip was designed to position the cup perfectly level. Obviously with the weight of a full cup, that will adjust some.
Window
The window clips lets you hang a cup holder from the window sill. There's actually a small gap with weather stripping it fits into, separate from where the window is. When it's installed it sits a few millimeters away from the window and does not affect its use. The wood trim on the doors actually protrudes slightly beyond everything else, so I designed the clip to rest on the leather portion to not scratch the wood.
There are two sizes (1st row, 2nd row) because the window ledges are not a consistent depth:
The 1st-row one (shorter of the two) can fit on
the forward part of the first row windows OR
the rear side of the second row windows (useful if camping in the back of an R1S).
The 2nd-row one (longer of the two) is designed to fit on the forward part of the second row window, near the door hinge.
They come in several variations for different situations:
The normal one (unlabeled) is 35mm wide.
A stable version has an extra hook on front that is meant to hook to the top of the trim panel where the interior lighting is. This is designed to fit in the forward-most position, as the trim is not parallel to the window sill.
A wide version is 65mm wide to help with stability when you have taller options.
A new extended version is the normal 35mm wide, but extends an extra 80mm down and includes two attachment points. This, hopefully, brings the overall center of gravity well below the window sill keep things more stable. It also includes a hook you should attach to the back that then tucks behind the door trim to hold it in place. It really needs the hook because of how long it is.
NOTE: It's HIGHLY recommended to use a piece of anti-slip rubber or thin felt or something on the back of the hook to protect the wood trim it sits on.
Seatback
This obviously fits on the back of the seat in front of you. It uses a 22.5 degree angle to try to level out the cup, which seemed to be a good balance between where my wife and I keep our seats reclined.
Door Pocket
These clip onto any door pocket. There are two sizes. The longer of the two is a bit more stable and should be preferred.
Front Storage
These attach to the side of the front storage area between the driver and passenger. Since the trim on the storage area is essentially an acute trapezoid, there's not much for it to attach to. The trim pieces do meet on the top edge, so these clips are designed to slide between them.
It works best to attach it by angling it up by about 45 degrees, hook the back onto the edge, then while holding the clip firmly onto the edge, rotate back to level. The small lip on the inside should slide between the two pieces. Finally, insert the front-v3-lock pin to secure it in place. See the animated gif at the end of the photo reel.
Front Storage Bracket
This is a horizontal bracket that spans across the front storage area between the driver and passenger. It provides two clips on the backside, which you can configure how you want.
I use a regular size cup clamp on the right side and put a small kleenex box on the left.
Make sure the side clips are attached first, then slide the bracket onto the two side clips. The space is not square so you'll slightly bend the bracket/rotate the clips to get everything aligned. This doesn't hurt anything, but does provide plenty of friction to keep everything locked in place tight. You should be able to slide the whole bracket forward/back a small amount (an inch or so) to adjust the placement and get it squared up.
R1T Rear Seat
Rob@OpenSourceEV contributed a custom clip that attaches to the edge of the storage area under the rear seat of an R1T. You can find his original model, which is what he sells, in the Clips + Adapters folder. I've also remixed his model to try to match the look and feel of the rest of my clips. I extended the attachment point by 12mm to allow the seat to be lifted all the way and not put pressure on a cup, if still attached. You can find my version along with all of the other clips.
This clip lets you attach a cup holder or cup clamp near your feet, great for holding a water bottle.
CHANGELOG
March 19, 2025
I moved the new clips out of the Experiments folder. They seem pretty good to me.
If you run into any issues, let me know!
March 13, 2025
NEW extended window clip
I'm looking for feedback on this!
Extends the window clips an extra 80mm and adds a second attachment point.
Includes a new hook you snap onto the back of the clip.
The hook is meant to slide behind the trim where the LED lights are.
This should help keep it from sliding left/right as well as bouncing away from the door.
I HIGHLY recommend adding some anti-slip rubber or felt or something to the back to keep the wood trim from getting scuffed.
The top attachment point is useful to attach a clamp to if you plan to use a tall water bottle. This gives you much more stability.

NEW front clip v3 design
New locking pin that slides in from the top.
It's much stronger and easier to use than previous versions.
The pin is 3.15mm x 15mm and the hole is 3.20mm x 15.4mm. The pin is only 0.05mm thinner than the hole to keep things tight. With my PETG tests, it's tight, but still slides well. If it doesn't work for you, try printing the pin at 98.5% scale. That should give you another 0.05mm. You want it as tight as possible.
There are now two sizes of these clips to accommodate thicker Ascend trim:
regular clips: 2.8mm trim thickness
ascend clips: 4.0mm trim thickness
You can use the ascend version on non-ascend trim, but the clip will likely sit a bit above the trim. If you're the kind of person that is bugged by that, use the normal size clip.

R1T rear seat clip updated
After test fitting in an R1T, I found the clip position (where the cup attaches) needed to be a few mm lower to keep pressure off it when you open the seat fully. I later realized that I test fit with a clamp and that the cups sit 5mm higher than a clamp. As a result, I've made the R1T clip 10mm longer to accommodate both.
The R1T model has the clip and the mount as two separate bodies in the STL, so if you want, you can adjust the height of the clip position easily by using “split → to parts” in the slicer, then sliding the clip to the position you want.

NEW locking pin design
The female side of the clips (cups/clamps/adapter) include new holes to be able to insert a new locking pin. This lets you easily lock the cup/clamp to a clip or adapter. I find it especially helpful on the angle adapter to keep it locked to the bracket.
I tested probably 5 separate designs to try to integrate a snap-lock mechanism directly into the clips, but all of them sucked because of the orientation that these parts get printed in. I ended up with this locking pin design because
It's easy to print.
The pin is super strong.
A single cup model is required. You simply choose whether to add the pin.
NOTE: You should be able to see clearly through the holes. If you can't, you might not have locked the clip in place all the way.
The double-sided front storage clip got a dovetail groove in it so that a new version of the “front-double-pin” can lock on the clip. This will help prevent the pin from falling out if some rotational force is put on the clip.
I highly recommend working the two pieces together first before installing, as it will likely be a very tight fit at first. Once you work them and smooth them out, they should slide pretty well.
This is still a bit of a work in progress and I'm considering remodeling these entirely differently. If you use this, leave a make or comment and let me know how the new grooves work for you (or if you feel they're entirely unnecessary). Personally, I don't use them as I have the bracket installed instead.
You can also find the previous non-dovetail version in the Archived folder if you feel the need.
I've remixed Rob's R1T seat clip to match the style of all of my other clips.
I used the dimensions from Rob's model, but don't have an R1T to test it on, so if you print it, please let me know how well it works or if it needs to get refined!
I've included “wide” versions of the window clips to help make them more stable. If you've worried about the stability of the window clips, try these. (I'm also thinking about an extra long version that sits lower … more on that soon)
Additionally, I've split the .3mf into three separate ones so it's not so large: clips, cups, and clamps.Jan 18, 2025
Rob@OpenSourceEV contributed his R1T Rear Seat clip model, which he designed. You can find it in the Clips+Adapters folder.
August 31, 2024
Updated double-sided front storage clips
separate driver and passenger side version
NEW front storage bracket
3mf included with MMU settings for logo
Spans across the storage area between double-sided clips
261mm long, but I printed diagonally
Provides 2 clip attachments for cup holders or cup clamps
I use a regular size cup clamp on the right side and put a small kleenex box on the left.
NEW 35 degree angle adapter
Use with front storage bracket to hold water bottle at 35 degree angle (off vertical)
Cup Clamps are a success
I have cup clamp models for all the regular sizes, but I found that using the “regular” size one works great to hold onto most water bottles. I use the xlarge version (110mm) to hold onto my giant 64oz water bottle (125mm). These require something like PETG for the flexibility.
NOTE: I'm abandoning the “lock” version of the cup holders. I'm not sure they're necessary with the tighter nubs on the clips and they were fragile anyway. The existing models will be moved into the Archived folder.
August 26, 2024
Increased size of nubs on clips for stronger grip (they now match what Rob@OpenSource EV uses).
NEW small size cup that more tightly fits coffee cups (as seen in my Ninebot Cup Holder remix) that is 68mm ID on bottom and 75mm ID on top.
NEW front double-sided clip
One unit with clips facing inside the storage area and outside.
There's also a new double clip pin model that wedges between the double clip and the sidewall to help keep the clip from being able to rotate off. It won't stop it completely, but it does make the connection stronger.
NEW Experimental Cup Clamps (Success)
These are effectively just the top portion of the cup holders. These can be used with the new front-double clip to hold onto drinks inside the front storage area.
Great way to hold water bottles and let the bottom rest on the floor.
No supports needed.
NEW Experimental Clip-On Springs (Failed)
This spring that can be clipped to the top of the cups or clamps and proves a spacer inside the cup. This lets smaller diameter items be placed inside and hopefully won't rattle around. I was using 4 per clamp but they never really worked well. I've abandoned this idea for now.

Models have not changed.
Updated PrusaSlicer (.3mf) settings:
compatible with MMU to allow colored logo
added paint-on organic supports for the arms of the cups for greater stability. I have noticed the front arms will flex some while printing and this seems to stabilize things.
May 19, 2024
Added a new xlarge size that is 110mm ID and 116mm tall, upon request.
April 25, 2024
I've made a few tweaks to hopefully make things better:
The V2 clips to no longer require supports on the curved edges. Instead of a full curve, they're a combination of a chamfer and a fillet to ease printing.
The tolerance between the clip face where the male side of the connector is attached is now closer to the female side. I had forgotten to look at this when I made the V2 changes and left a nearly 1mm gap. Hopefully this reduces any chance of deformation over time and produces a tighter fit (but hopefully not so tight you can't get it apart!).
All of the cups in the .3mf have the Rivian logo embedded in them now if you want to print it with that. If not, just remove them in the slicer.
April 16, 2024 - Version 2!
Introducing Version 2 of my cup holders! They're light grey in the photos. The black ones are my original Version 1, which are functionally the same so I didn't bother taking new photos. The TLDR of the changes:
new connector design for cleaner prints (not compatible with V1, unfortunately)
all clip connectors have bumps on them for a tighter, snap fit.
new front window clip
new extra long door pocket clip
new optional locking tab on cups
new Jumbo size cup.
March 30, 2024 - Version 1
My original Version 1 was released. These have been replaced by Version 2 above.

I liked the cup design, so made my own variant of it to be able to have a normal and large size for water bottles, in an effort to make cup holders for my car. I tried to use the same clip design as the original, but ended up remodeling it to print cleaner.
