These spool holders use 4mm outer diameter PTFE tube to let the filament slip rather than bearings.
4 of them can be connected and fit into a 22l Ikea SAMLA box (801.029.76).
The zip ties help fasten the PTFE tube to the holder and allow for a bit of adjustment so smaller spools can be lined up on the roller.
Notes on filament spools:
1. Each holder can hold spools of a maximum width of 68mm. This should cover most spools, only 1 of my spools was too wide (a wider prusament spool) but this wasn't a problem because spools can be placed across multiple holders.
2. Because the holder uses PTFE tube rather than roller bearings - cardboard spools might not play nicely but your mileage may vary.
Recommended setup in a SAMLA box:
- the box (IKEA 801.029.76)
- 4 of these holders (~130g filament)
- 22 zip ties
- ~1m of 4mm OD PTFE tube (I used this https://amzn.eu/d/8Llkz6F)
To assemble slide the PTFE tube through the gap for the cross bar and then press it up into place on either side. The cross bar can then be pressed in.
When assembling all 4 together, the PTFE tube can be slid all the way through and connected at the ends first.
This leaves quite a bit of room at the top of the box for attaching your preferred dessicant holder. You can also pour some dessicant on the bottom of the box under the spools like I did.
