Modular 3D Catan Terrain System

This is a comprehensive, easy-to-print 3D terrain system designed to bring your Catan board to life. Built with a focus on printability and stability, this system uses a unique Frame-and-Insert design. By printing the hexagonal frames and the terrain inserts separately, you can achieve higher detail, use multiple colors without an mmu and with less waste on multi-material printer, and ensure a perfect fit every time.

• Modular Two-Part Design: Each hex consists of a universal frame and a terrain insert. This allows you to mix and match colors or replace specific tiles easily.

• Variety & Realism: Includes multiple unique variations for the core terrain types (Forest, Hills, Mountains, Fields, and Pasture) to ensure no two boards look the same.

• Engineered for Printing: Optimized for FDM printing with minimal cleanup, ensuring the hexagons lock together securely for a stable playing surface.

Technical Specs

• Assembly: Print the frame and terrain separately; once printed, the terrain insert is glued into the frame for a permanent, flush fit.

• Nozzle: 0.4mm

• Layer Height: 0.2mm for frames; 0.1mm–0.15mm recommended for terrain inserts to capture the fine details.

• Supports: None required.

Finishing

First apply a plastic primer (this is my favourite). Paint with acrylic paints, Then use this Modge Podge for a clear protective coat.
