Based on Adam Savage's one day build of a gas lamp, I wanted to create something myself. Being based in Ireland not all of the parts Adam suggested where available to me.

I'm not going to rehash Adam parts list, but the key differences:

  • Ikea Glimrande lantern is the basis of this.
  • For the electrical parts I used the nearest equivalents I could find on amazon.co.uk: Bulb, Switches, Battery Holders You can follow Adam's video for most of the assembly, key differences:
  • The bulb above needs ~6V rather than the ~3V bulb Adam used - so I used two battery holders in series
    • In order to put the bulb inside the tealight holder, I cut off the defuser and then cut around the base of the lamp. (Hopefully the photos show this)

I printed a mantel/defuser that fitted over the LED and sat inside the tealight holder. I've included the OpenSCAD file for the mantel as well as the STL, so you can modify it to match any differences in your bulb or indeed to fit a different lamp.

Print Settings

Resolution: 0.2mm

Infill: 10%
Filament: ColorFabb PLA Yellow Translucent

Notes:

I used a translucent filament, but I suspect a normal PLA would work fine - if you had problems with the light transmission I'd suggest changing the wall thickness in the OpenSCAD file down, I've printed with a value of 1 without issue.
