This was a group project. My partner is linked below:
@RaghavDevula_187

This was a learning based project meant to teach me and my partner to learn about how Solidworks functions. This was our mission statement: “With a partner, you will recreate your ghost clip using Solidworks.  You and your partner MUST have identical files that you create by collaborating on each step, one at a time.” We also had to replicate a separate clip that was our model.

Our constraints were:

  • The sketch must begin with a constraint box (center-rectangle created from the origin)
  • The sketch must be fully defined when complete.
  • Dimensions should be detailed but efficient.
  • The sketch must contain zero error messages.
  • Demonstrate efficient use of “Construction Lines” / ”Reference Geometry”.
  • Demonstrate efficient use of “Offset Entities”
  • Demonstrate efficient use of “Mirroring”

Instructions:

Constraint box:

Make a constraint box 6 cm wide and 13 cm tall using a center rectangle marked for construction with construction lines to midpoint centered on the origin. Be sure to highlight the box and click on “for construction”

-The entire sketch should be made within this box

Make bottom arcs:

Step 1. Make a vertical construction line inside the box 2 cm from the left of the constraint box (Line 1)

Step 2. Make a horizontal line 1 cm up from the bottom of the constraint box (Line 2)

Step 3. Make a 3 point arc with one point at the intersection of lines 1 and 2, one at the left side of the box and the top point coincident to the bottom of the construction box

Step 4. Create 2 more arcs in this fashion and then make them all equal as well as coincident with the bottom of the constraint box

Make top hair:

Step 1. Make a horizontal construction line inside the box 0.75cm below the top of the constraint box (Line 3)

Step 2. Make an isosceles triangle (non-base sides are equal) with a base of 1 cm with the height of Line 3 to the top of the constraint box

Step 3. Repeat Step 2 two more times, and then mirror the three triangles about the vertical midpoint construction line. If that doesn’t work, create three more triangles that are all equal. The final triangles should line up with the edge of the constraint box

Make eyes:

Step 1. Make a vertical construction line inside the box 1.75cm from the right of the constraint box (Line 4) and a horizontal construction line inside the box 2.75cm from the top of the constraint box (Line 5)

Step 2. Make a circle with a diameter of 1.25 cm at the intersection of lines 4 and 5 and mirror it over the vertical midpoint construction line

Make mouth:

Step 1. Make a horizontal construction line inside the box 2.25cm from the bottom of the constraint box (Line 6) and a horizontal construction line inside the box 4 cm from the bottom of the constraint box (Line 7)

Step 2. Make a vertical construction line inside the box 1.25cm from the left of the constraint box (Line 8)

Step 3. Make a line (not construction) from Line 7 up line 8 for 4.15cm

Step 4. Make an arc from the bottom of that line with a 1.75cm radius tangent with that line and the top of the arc coincident with line 6.

Step 5. From the other end of that arc, make a vertical line 4.15cm high.

Step 6. Offset the mouth inside by 0.525 cm and hit cap ends (arc)

Finish Up:

Now make a line from the bottom of the leftmost and rightmost arcs to the bottom of the leftmost and rightmost triangles. (completing the sketch)

Design Choices:

To start off, we had made a worse version of this clip. After careful consideration and resizing, we eventually decided to increase the size of the eyes from a 1 cm diameter to a 1.25cm diameter.

Before:                                                                         After:

We then increased the length of the mouth from 3 cm to 4.15 cm and the width of its offset from 0.55 cm to 0.525 cm.

Before:                                                                             After:
