I designed this to mount some model planes via steel rod, like “battle map” sand table figures.
The main issue to solve was that a purely 3D printed base is too light. A weighted base makes the model less likely to tip over in addition to giving it a better, solid “feel”.
So, my solution was to make a two-piece, hollow base, which can be filled with iron filings, sand, or some other heavy medium, and then glued together.
The model includes a 1.7mm hole for the steel rods I was using, but obviously adjust as needed, or fill it in if you want to mount your model directly.
