I created this remix because I have a lot of old spools that are relatively narrow (Wanhao maybe?). Some are 48mm and some are 50mmm wide and I wanted to use the winder for them as well.
While I was editing the parts I also modified the base sled and carriage to hook into the frame and each other in order to prevent the sled to lift up during heavy loads.

Update: added a 54mm variant (untested, I don't have these spools)

There are a few options when using this upgrade.
(you will need the parts from the original design as well, at least the winder, and if you like the hex upgrade)

  1. if you already printed and assembled the original winder and just want the upgraded sled, you can print Filament Guide Carriage and Filament Guide Sled 57 (this is the original Bambu sized spool) which just replace the originals. If you want to be able to slot the carriage into the frame, also print Sled seat and glue it onto the frame (easiest done by gluing them while they are already slotted into the carriage for alignment)
  2. if you have not printed the original Winder Spool holder main body yet, you can combine it with the Sled seat and print it all in one go. In Bambu Studio drag both models into the window and select Yes when asked if you want to load them as single object with multiple parts. In Cura you can select the models and merge them. They will align in the proper position.
  3. if you are like me and would like the option to wind different spool sizes, you'd want to do either 1. or 2. above. Changing the sled a lot is going to loosen up the vertical gear shaft which is the only thing holding the whole sled assembly together in the original design. The latching carriage will prevent everything from coming loose.
Then choose the spool size. 57mm is the original Bambu spool. I also included parts for a 48mm spool (my Wanhao spools are this wide) and a 50mm spool (I accidentally made this because I was looking at an odd one).
Each spool variant requires 4 parts:
Filament Guide Sled XX, Gear linear for filament carriage XX, linear gear XX, Worm XX
(with XX standing for the size 48/50/57)
  4. if you are using the hex upgrade parts, pick the parts with the word UPGRADED at the end of the name

Print settings, everything except the Worm
  • 0.16mm Optimal @BBL X1C
(Although you may get totally away with 0.2mm layer height)
  • Wall loops: 3
  • Outer wall: 60 mm/s
  • Infill 25 %
  • no support needed
Print settings for the Worm gear
  • 0.12mm Fine @BBL X1C
(benefits from thin layers due to extreme overhangs)
  • Outer wall: 60 mm/s
  • it comes in laying on it's side, rotate it by 90 degrees so it prints upright

With the exception of the added Sled seat (see above) everything assembles just like the original.

Full disclosure, I used the upgraded hex shaft version from the very beginning and never printed the original round shafts. This means I have only physically tested the UPGRADED versions. But the parts only differ in size and shape of the holes so I'm fairly certain both variants will work. Let me know if they don't.

Happy spooling.

Differences of the remix compared to the original

  • added fixtures and v-slot to the sled and carriage to mesh with frame and prevent lifting off/easier disassembly for sled change
  • added optional gearing for smaller spools
  • provided all gears to fit both the original winder and the upgrade to hex shafts
