What is this for?

Having a hard time holding drill bits to ream your 3D printed holes to size?

These adapters are for adding a small handle for your drill bits so you can hold them without using pliers that might mar the shank or having to chuck the bit in a larger tool. You can also print the handle for more ergonomic reaming!

The adapter comes in two flavors: clamp and simple. The clamp flavor clamps down on your drill bit, while the simple flavor uses a bolt to hold the bit in place. Both use an M3 socket head cap screw and nut. M3 × 10 mm for the simple flavor and M3 × 8 mm for the clamp flavor.

I've found that the clamp flavor works well for larger bits (≥ 4 mm) and the simple flavor works well for smaller bits  (≤ 3 mm).

The handle is designed to have the adapters slot in and optionally held in place with a ø6 mm x 10 mm magnet.

Files

The adapters included are 2.0 mm, 2.5 mm, 3.0 mm, 3.5 mm, 4.0 mm, 4.5 mm, 5.0 mm and 5.5mm.

Blank STEP files with no holes of both flavors of adapters are also provided. If you need larger than 6 mm, you might be better off using a drill. :)

I also found the handle useful for many other tools so a blank STEP model of the handle is also provided.

3D printing settings

I've printed these with the following settings using Prusament PETG Mango Yellow on a Prusa MINI with a 0.6 mm nozzle.

I highly recommend using PrusaSlicer 2.4.0+ for easy support removal.

Handle:

  • 0.40 mm layer height (0.6 mm nozzle)
  • 20% Infill
  • Supports Everywhere

Adapters:

  • 0.30 mm layer height (0.6 mm nozzle)
  • 30% Infill
  • Supports Everywhere (you might want to add a support blocker in the nut slot for the simple flavor)
