Print Instructions

There are four methods to print this model. I've tested them all and they all have their problems, which I will describe below.

Every method was printed at 0.15mm layer height and requires supports on buildplate.

My recommondation is: If having a seam doesn't bother you, print Cut Vertical. Otherwise, try No Feet.

All

Files: “airship hexside-hull all”

The entire model is printed in one piece. This is potentially the best option, if you manage to pull it off. Its problems are:

  • When removing the supports, it is very likely that some of the feet will break off. You can reattach them with some glue.
  • You have to be very careful when you are breaking the wings free.

Cut Horizontal

Files: “airship hexside-hull cut horizontal top”, “airship hexside-hull cut horizontal bottom”

The model is cut horizontally. Its problems are:

  • You will need glue. There will be a visible seam along the bottom.
  • You have to be very careful when you are breaking the wings free.

Cut Vertical

Files: “airship hexside-hull cut vertical”

The model is cut vertically. Its problems are:

  • You will need glue. There will be a visible seam along the entire length of the model.

I recommend using adaptive layer height with this method.

No Feet

Files: “airship hexside-hull no feet”, “airship hexside-foot” (6 copies)

Like All, but the feet are printed seperately. Its problems are:

  • While installing the feet, it is very easy to break them.
  • You have to be very careful when you are breaking the wings free.

Breaking the wings free

With most methods, it can be difficult to break the wings free without breaking them off entirely.

The best way to break them free is to grab the wing with some pliers as shown in the picture. Then slowly rotate the wing down. Take care that you rotate the wing around the shaft in the middle and do not break this shaft off.

This problem exists because after printing, the hinge is stuck to the floor of the gap where the wing sits. I could find no way around this, because there is no place for removable supports.
