Description

This 3D printed single pickup allows you to customize guitar sound.

By choosing the length of copper wire for a coil in pickup you steer with resistance and this influences your sound.

Work is still in progress, for now we have pickup with 0,06 mm copper wire and 6,8 kohm resistance. This value gives more severe sound than common Fender pickups which have 5,8-6,2 kohm resisatnace.

You can hear how it sounds here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vnK9ZAWGBs

This is my friend's idea who is guitarist. He also created these 3d models. If you want to hear more of his music check: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-oUkevg1yatkoDmL0KMm3g

Instructions

You will need:

  • 3 printed parts
  • spool of 0,06 mm copper wire
  • 5x15 mm AlNiCo5 magnets (alternatively 5x18mm)
  • natural wax
  • two electrical wires to connect it

Print all the parts, insert 5x15mm AlNiCo5 magnets and create a coil with the resistance at least 5,5 kohm.

There are many movies on internet showing how to create a coil, we used low budget method where we used a drill.

Solder electrical wires to two copper wire endings. Remember to remove a insulation from copper wire in the place where you solder it. You can use a source of heat for this. Heat blower will do the job. Lighter is not very good because it will burn the wires.

When it is done take some pot and melt natural wax in it. Do not exceed your polymer melting temperature! So when you reach 60 - 70 degrees, immerse your whole pickup for 20 mins.

After this leave pickup for cool down. Insert the cover. Your pickup is ready to mount on a guitar :)
