I designed it to have the two bearings near top-dead-centre but anywhere from the 10 o'clock to 12 o'clock positions would work just fine.

The roller cylinder was added to the design and has a length of 78mm and a diameter designed for an ID: 53mm reel which perfectly accommodates my eSun cardboard reels and keeps them from moving around when being spun. Plastic reels tend not to sit in the roller gaps. Larger reel diameters are not a problem and roll just as well. If you are to make your cylinder then in theory an ID of 45mm would be the smallest that could realistically fit but I have not tested this.

I printed with the following settings:

  • 0.2mm layer height
  • Supports only for centre piece with flat side down on the bed. Used line supports everywhere to only support the bottom of each of the bearing locators.
  • Used PLA+ but PETG be better for strength and long-term fatigue as this part of the printer undergoes constant vibration when printing.

Threads were tight when first printed but freed up after a few turns. You may need to increase horizontal /vertical expansion if you require more tolerance. I also used the “Middle” slicing tolerance in Cura so an “exclusive” slicing tolerance would likely produce greater thread clearance.

This design requires uses 608-2RS ball bearings with OD:22mm and ID: 8mm and width of 8mm. In theory any bearing with ID of 8mm should work fine as well.

Spool Holder for Ender / CR 10
by tonystockert (thingiverse.com)

Differences of the remix compared to the original

Created to reduce filament tension caused by friction from the original spool holder.

This design was changed from the original design from Thingiverse because I did not have MR105-ZZ bearings on hand. This design instead uses 608-2RS ball bearings with OD:22mm and ID: 8mm and width of 8mm. Ball bearings press fit onto the square bearing locators. They aren't overlight tight fitting for me but I've been printing without any issues since making this part.

The rear nut was also reduced in diameter to fit within the spool holder bracket.
