The Arcade Control Panel offered by AtGames for their Legends Pinball device has a joystick which allows for generally free movement. However, playing classic games may offer an improved experience if the joystick is restricted to 4 degrees of freedom (up/down/left/right or diagonals, but not both).
The frame piece sits on the Arcade Control Panel. It should be sized to lock in slightly to prevent rotation. The restrictor piece may be inserted in any 45° rotation to allow for either mode of restriction.
The pieces are offered in both 3mm and 4mm thicknesses. The 4mm pieces seem to be a bit more stable (less likely for the restrictor to pop out under vigorous use), but the 3mm ones fit a bit more cleanly. Using electrical tape to keep the frame in place may help.
I'm not sure this is even a good solution. It may serve as a jumping off point for someone to remix, though!
